Simple Pattern Recognition in the Defective Field of Hemianopic Subjects
Does computer-based training (therapy) for patients with partial blindness—designed to increase visual field size—transfer to other visual functions? Building on previous clinical trials, E. Kasten, D.A. Poggel and B.A. Sabel were able to demonstrate improvement in pattern recognition and color discrimination, although those functions were not specifically trained.
By opening up the "bottleneck" created by a brain lesion, computer-based training (therapy) can help visual information better flow to higher cortical areas, allowing the patient to enjoy simultaneous benefits and reducing the total amount of therapy time required to improve visual function.
