Sabel BA, Kasten E. Restoration of Vision by Training of Residual Functions. Ophthalmology 2000, 11:430–436
Adding to growing evidence that the brain can adapt to structural change, B.A. Sabel and E. Kasten discuss high-resolution field tests which can identify areas of impaired vision that still have residual capacity. These areas of transition between blind and seeing regions are the key to visual restitution training (Vision Restoration Therapy).
As long as they have some residual vision, patients who have suffered stroke, head injury, or partial optic nerve damage can enlarge their visual field through repetitive, computer-based stimulation—and maintain improved vision for years, even after therapy ends.
