'Heroes in Medicine' Honors People, Groups
04/29/2006 » David Goodlette, chairman of the Health Care District of Palm Beach County, the Haitian Outreach Project and Trudy Webb, the former CEO of Boca Raton-based Hospice by the Sea, were among the winners Friday at the Palm Beach County Medical Society's annual "Heroes in Medicine" awards.
Individuals and organizations were nominated in seven categories including community outreach, volunteer, professional, physician and student.
More than 250 people from the county health-care community attended the award presentation at The Ritz-Carlton in Manalapan on Friday. A total of 31 people and organizations were nominated.
Drs. Arthur Virshup and John Whelton were given the physician award for their work in running a rheumatoid arthritis clinic for the past 14 years that helps those without insurance.
Navroze Mehta, CEO of Boca Raton-based NovaVision™, won the advancement in health-care award. His company develops and markets a noninvasive medical device that can help restore vision lost as a result of stroke.
Dorothy Martin, a trauma nurse at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, was given the non-physician health-care provider hero award for her work at the hospital and in raising funds for health-care services in Third World countries.
Ryan Ruark and Lauren Sheffler shared the student award.
