FAQs: Vision Restoration Therapy — Vision Rehab after Stroke or TBI

Read below to learn the basics of Vision Restoration Therapy, including how this vision rehab system works, how long it takes to complete, the process of starting a patient on the therapy, and more.

What is Vision Restoration Therapy?

NovaVision VRT™ Vision Restoration Therapy™ is the evaluation and treatment of visual defects caused by brain trauma, stroke, inflammation, surgical removal of brain tumors, or brain surgery. This revolutionary technique attempts to repair damaged neuro networks based on science of neuroplasticity.

Patients receive a diagnostic evaluation for their vision loss at a participating VRT Partner Center. The test results are sent to NovaVision™ for analysis and the creation of a customized course of vision rehabilitation. The therapy results are evaluated by NovaVision on a monthly basis and updated therapy modules are created and sent to the patient.

How does Vision Restoration Therapy vision rehab work?

VRT works by stimulating the areas of residual vision in patients who require vision rehab after stroke or TBI.

Is VRT vision rehabilitation covered by insurance or Medicare?

The patient is responsible for the at-home therapy cost of VRT vision rehab after stroke, TBI, or a related injury. If the patient has Medicare, a portion of the center visits may be covered. If the patient has other insurance, coverage for the center visits should be verified. If the visits are not covered, the patient will be responsible for the cost; however, some centers may offer financing through a third-party financial institution to provide an alternative payment method to cover the cost of VRT.

What is the process for starting a patient on VRT?

There are three steps in starting a patient on this technique of vision rehab after stroke or TBI:

How long does it take to complete VRT?

The initial phase of VRT vision rehabilitation therapy typically lasts six to seven months. In this phase, therapy is performed for one hour per day, six days a week, prescribed in time intervals based on the needs and abilities of the patient. After the initial phase of therapy is completed, the patient is re-evaluated by their physician and additional vision rehabilitation therapy may be recommended.

How easy is VRT compared to Humphrey and other vision rehab techniques?

As long as the patient can be attentive for 20-30 continuous minutes, focus on a fixation point, and respond, they should be able to perform the NovaVision VRT diagnostic test and vision rehabilitation therapy.
