Computer-Based Training for the Treatment of Partial Blindness

In Nature Medicine, authors E. Kasten, S. Wüst, W. Behrens-Baumann and B.A. Sabel describe the results of two placebo-controlled clinical trials which sought to evaluate whether training can help restore lost vision in humans as it has been proven to do in animals.

Patients who suffered either optic nerve or visual cortex damage used a computer program designed by the authors to systematically train the visual system. As a result, doctors Kasten, et. al. were able to show that vision can be improved and blindness substantially reduced through repetitive stimulation of the visual field.
