Neurology Today, Nov. 18, 2009 - At the American Neurological Association meeting in October, Harvard researchers reported findings from a small study which examined the impact of combining vision restoration therapy (VRT) with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). 6 study participants with hemianopias were randomly assigned to either tDCS and VRT or a sham stimulation and VRT for 30 minutes a day, three days a week for three months. While more patients are needed to confirm findings, results showed the patients who received VRT and tDCS to have improved 5.2 degrees over baseline, compared to 1.9 degrees for those receiving VRT plus the sham stimulation. Larger improvements were also seen in the tDCS group with the Minnesota reading test and a standard visual perception test. Findings suggest similar benefits in the visual cortex as previously seen in the motor cortex from additional stimulation from tCDS.
